Caring For Silver Jewellery

Silver is a natural material which reacts to it’s environment, and this can cause your silver jewellery to become tarnished which is an assurance that it is good quality silver.

Regular cleaning of your silver jewellery in mild soapy water with a soft bristle toothbrush or wiping your silver pieces with a silver polishing cloth will prevent tarnishing. It is advised to store your jewellery separately to avoid scratching.

You can also clean mildly tarnished silver at home with Sterling Silver dips - but we recommend that silver dip is only used occasionally. It is a good rule not to dip any jewellery with stones, but gemstones that are particularly affected are opals, pearls, turquoise, sodalite, malachite, lapis lazuli, coral or any soft, porous stones. Also remember not to leave your jewellery in the dip too long and always rinse well in soapy water to remove any residue, as overuse can be detrimental to your jewellery. To make sure your jewellery stays perfect, always read the manufacturer’s instructions. After polishing or rinsing an item, be sure to wipe the item with a clean cloth to ensure no chemical residue remains on the item.

Be sure to avoid dipping opals in Sterling Silver dips as this will destroy the stone. Be careful not to expose any opal to household chemicals, hand creams, soap or any other substances as this could affect the opalescence of the piece. If the opal is exposed, rinse it quickly with plain water and wipe it with a clean cloth.

With regards to silver jewellery that is gold plated, you may need to have the piece re-plated once every 2 - 3 years depending on how often the piece is worn.

Before putting on your beaded necklace or bracelet, check the stringing is secure. We do provide restringing services on all our necklaces but depending on the warranty of the item this service may come at an extra cost.

Any damaged jewellery can be brought into the store for repairs but if it is beyond the 3 month warranty this repair will come at an extra cost.
